East Pakistan Crisis and Its Consequences 1969-1971

Abstract
The crisis in Pakistan between 1969 and 1971 marked a pivotal moment in the country’s modern history. It ultimately led to the secession of East Pakistan, a region rich in natural resources and human capital. This study explores the roots of the crisis beginning in 1969, shedding light on the failure of General Ayub Khan’s government to contain the growing tensions, which eventually compelled him to resign. He was succeeded by General Yahya Khan, who likewise failed to resolve the crisis. The situation escalated into the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which ended with Pakistan’s defeat and Islamabad’s reluctant acceptance of the new reality—the separation of East Pakistan and the establishment of the independent state of Bangladesh.
